![]() He took us to the best spots and was also able to show us the lava tress which were really cool. He was a great pilot with a southern Texas accent that was truly comforting for our first helicopter ride. THANK YOU DEREK! Chris was new but never missed a beat. He even returned my hat that I left in the shuttle after we were dropped off. He new everything about the island and even gave us a few recommendations for later on. I can't speak highly enough about both of these two people. Yesterday was our rescheduled day and we couldn't have been happier! Derek was our guide and Chris was our pilot. Our first attempt was rescheduled after bad weather. I understand that weight needs to be shifted for security reasons but this can be better planned in advance in terms of allocating passengers differently to the respective flights depending on the weigth situation to avoid situations like that, considering that the flights are very expensive. My Girlfriend and I went to take a Helicopter tour that came highly reccomended by Hilton. We were not allowed to swap seats (despite the fact we paid extra for this) as we needed to balance the three overweight passengers sitting in the back. Eventually I was forced to sit in the middle, between the pilot and my father with a very restricted view and unable to take photographs. What was particularly annoying in our case was the fact that we booked the two seats in front of the helicopter way in advance and at extra costs. The Mauna Loa can't be included in the tour as there is no license to fly to higher altitudes. Here unfortunately we didn't spend enough time and left again after two rotations. It took us 45 minutes to reach the volcanoes national park with the Kilauea volcanoe and its craters. Whilst both destinations are very interesting and great to watch from a helicopter, the way there is long without anything interesting to see. We took the long tour, taking almost 2 hours and covering the vulcanoes national park in the western part of the island as well as the Waipi'o Valley in the north as highlights. ![]()
